It’s no secret Thai is my favorite cuisine. It’s surprising I don’t make it more at home. I think I was discouraged by the fact that most of my family don’t share the same sentiment about Thai as I do. And all of my family agree that Thai food has an errr…ummm…”distinct” scent ;D. Suffice it to say I must get my Thai fix outside the home. And that’s fine by me because I get to explore my favorite cuisine in like company and in new and exciting settings. A few years ago, a friend of mine told me the best Thai spot in metro Chicago was right under my nose in Northwest Indiana. I was still relatively new to NW Indiana and thought that nothing could compare to my beloved Sing Ha in downtown Chicago or Rice Thai in metro Atlanta. I wasn’t even sure I trusted her taste buds until we dined together not too long after her recommendation. It was then I discovered we had kindred palates. I then made a date to try Asparagus A to the S to the A to the P!
My first experience at Asparagus was actually with the whole family (imagine that). It was my birthday dinner and I decided I would make all of them murmur, wince and complain while I enjoyed my favorite cuisine of all time – hey, it’s my party they can cry if they want to ;)! I had read this restaurant was “fine dining” but I have to admit I was not prepared for the atmosphere – I had a gang of kids including a 1 year old in tow! We walked in and it seemed the crowd went silent…in actuality, the crowd had always been silent LOL!
The waitress was pleasant and seated us at a table large enough to accommodate my brood and there were no staring eyes, snickers or snooty looks from the restaurant patrons. That was the first obstacle! The second obstacle was feeding the masses with something they would actually swallow and not regurgitate!! The menu was so vast, it was almost Cheesecake Factoryish. Way more options than I’d expect from a “fine dining” spot with nice white linens and romantic candlelit centerpieces. The appetizers alone had my head spinning. Thankfully, our waitress clued me in on some of the best and most well-liked dishes. We opted for his recommendation and boy were we all satisfied!
We all left the restaurant with pleasantly full bellies…the kids even begged to return again soon. That was a few years ago and I have been back to Asparagus over and over again (with and without the kids including the new addition to the family). I have thoroughly enjoyed every meal (and drinks) each time. I have been with friends who aren’t as much a fan of Thai as I am (including my hubby) and even they love the place. You really can’t go wrong with anything you order, but here are a few of my top choices:
Asparagus Crispy Rolls (fresh asparagus & bacon dusted with parmesan cheese, wrapped in rice paper with citrus dipping sauce): One word – YUMALICIOUSNESS!!
Avocado Crispy Rolls (avocado, red onion, tomato, & cilantro wrapped in rice paper with sweet & sour sauce and ginger sauce): Seriously, I have to figure out how to make these! I ordered one of these with 2 friends who ordered 2 additional appetizers. Suffice it to say these were all gone and the other appetizers were left in the dust…SO YUMTASTIC!
Asparagus & Crabmeat Soup (french inspired, made with white & green asparagus): Who knew??? I would have never put this combo together in my mind. It is great…a little peppery so if that’s not your thing, don’t order it. It is very YUMMY!
Mussaman Curry (mussaman curry with chicken or tofu in a coconut milk with potatoes, onions pineapples & roasted nuts): YUM CITY baby!!! This is the first entree I ever had at Asparagus and it is still my favorite! With shrimp, tofu or whatever…it is hands down the best mussaman ever!
