 004My friends, I could not have possibly said it better than that. 🙂 What in the name of pepperoni pizza could get more simpler than a PB&J? Just the thought of it sparks pure nostalgia.
When I was a kid, sometimes I’d make 2 or 3 PB&Js at a time. My parents would get a huge jar of peanut butter as a government handout for the poor and middle class. Let me tell you, I sure appreciated all that good, creamy peanut butter. My siblings and I would make the best PB&Js with the jam variations my dad would find on sale at the local Aldi. Back then I didn’t know anything about bargain shopping, the price of milk or government cheese.  All I knew was my favorite was strawberry jam YOWZA! It was a match made in pure foodie heaven!!
But what kid doesn’t love peanut butter and jelly? Well…perhaps those with nut allergies. To those I offer my most sincerest, heart-felt, and deepest of sympathies for this recipe. Because to miss out on a fried pb&j sandwich is truly missing one of life’s simplest pleasures.
I have made this about 40 ways to Sunday. I’ve used all kinds of jellies and jams and even peanut butter variations like cashew butter, Nutella and a dark chocolate peanut butter I found on clearance at Aldi recently. I can never say any one combination is better than the rest – they’re

Somehow my children have convinced me that only the fried PB&Js that I make taste great. Funny thing is…none of them have ever tried to make it themselves – not even the teenager! Even little Noah has come to know the smell of a fried PB&J sandwich on a lazy Saturday at home during lunch time. Let me tell ya, if I don’t put 2 of these on his plate and STAT, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth! Haaaaa! 😀
This is one of those recipes that’s super simple…just like making a grilled cheese…but if you go too fast, you can easily jack it up! You don’t EVER want a jacked up PB&J. It’s almost a sin, isn’t it?
So take your time with this recipe, don’t rush the spreading or the frying…just relax and let it flow…:)
Fried PB&J


  • Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread
  • Peanut Butter (or any other nut butter)
  • Jam (or jelly - any flavor)
  • Butter


  1. Spread peanut butter on one slice of bread gently making sure to cover corners. Coat evenly and to desired thickness.
  2. If jam has been refrigerated, whip or stir it right in the jar to soften it a bit (this makes it spread better).
  3. Spread jam on the other slice of bread gently making sure to cover corners. Coat evenly and to desired thickness. (I prefer a 2:1 peanut butter/jam ratio.)
  4. Combine both slices of bread and set aside.
  5. Heat griddle on medium.
  6. Butter griddle until well covered.
  7. Add sandwich to griddle and fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Prepare more sandwiches for frying at this stage - you will NOT eat just one :-)!
  8. Flip sandwich and fry the other side until golden brown, about another 2 minutes.
  9. Transfer fried sandwich to a plate and let cool 1 minute.
  10. Slice if desired and serve warm.
  11. Enjoy!
