I have always been a seafood lover. Since my very early twenties when I worked in downtown Chicago, Shaw’s Crab House has been one of my favorite places for good seafood. I’ve always thought of this restaurant as a great place for date night, but never considered it for a family outing. Quality food costs a quality price and feeding my brood of 8, even at discount prices, costs some quality bucks!
That is, until I discovered Shaw’s fabulous Sunday Brunch includes a kids-eat-free value! That’s right – 2 kids ages 12 and under eat free for each paying adult. YOWZA!!! You don’t have to tell me twice! I spread the word to my extended family to meet me, my hubby and the kids there for Valentine’s Day weekend. I didn’t have to tell them twice either. 🙂
We couldn’t make reservations for brunch due to restaurant rules, but that was fine with me. The wait for a table that seated all of us (my crew plus two more families) was about an hour or so. That’s not too bad of a wait, but with antsy kids it could seem like a lifetime! My hubby and I took turns holding the baby, waiting in the car with some of the kids, taking this one or that one to the bathroom, etc. When they called our names, however, that lengthy wait was long forgotten! Wait?? What wait??? Let’s EAT!!! LOL!
There is something for everyone on this menu. Because I try to cook a variety of things at home and especially those things that I love, my kids pretty much have the same tastes as mine. When they discovered they could eat as much shrimp as they wanted, they were surprised and elated! They had fun creating their own omelettes and decorating their own freshly made waffles. The buffet spread boasts a cold seafood bar with ceviche, shrimp cocktail and smoked salmon to name a few things. The warm buffet included my personal favorites: king crab legs, lobster bisque, maryland style crab cakes, breakfast sausage links, french toast, corn casserole and cheesy broccoli…YUMMINESS! There’s just so much on the menu, I couldn’t possibly list it all!
It is always a HUGE plus when the restaurant staff is extra warm and inviting – especially for large families. There aren’t many fine dining places that will comfortably suit kids of any age and cater to their needs. Our waiter was great – the kids really enjoyed talking to him. In fact, he saved us a few trips back to the buffet to get this or that for the kids plates. My kids thought he was their personal garcon LOL! In fact, while waiting for a table, one of the restaurant staff allowed my boys to feel and hold a live lobster. How awesome was that!!
I am normally not an advocate for buffets. They tend to have poor quality food, low food safety standards and they’re way overcrowded. Shaw’s Crab House has always been a restaurant with high standards, great food and great people! I sincerely hope you try it – if not for family dining, make it a date with the spouse! Tell them PThirty1 sent you! 😉
